Q: Where can I go to check for virus

Listen to your own instincts when using your computer. When you are on line and something don't feel right. It might not be. Don't just proceed with what you are doing. stop and ask someone!
You should never have to download any programs just to view a webpage! Yes there may be plug-ins required, the most common areJava, Adobe Flash, Adobe Shochwave and quicktime. But these are plug-ins not programs!
If anything says your computer is "at risk" while you are online, look carefully to see if it is a website pop-up. (this would be a message in your own browser window) This is a very common trick! Ignore it if possible, or simply close your web browser (Internet Explorer for example) and re-start your web browser to continue.
